What are the latest developments on the alcohol detection and monitoring solution market?

Detecting and measuring alcohol consumption has been around for more than a century and today alcohol detection and monitoring (ADM) solutions are widely used across several application areas. The market can broadly be divided into four main segments: road safety and transportation; workplace safety and occupational health; healthcare, treatment and rehabilitation; and legal, regulatory and public safety applications. Although these application areas may overlap in practice, they differ in terms of end users, deployment environments and device requirements.

Device types can furthermore be divided into four categories being breathalysers, ignition interlock devices (IIDs), ankle and wrist-worn devices, and wall-mounted and stationary devices. IIDs are primarily used within Driving Under the Influence (DUI) offender programmes and workplace safety applications where the devices are installed directly into vehicles to prevent operation by impaired drivers. Traditional breathalysers are more versatile and can be used across the majority of application areas. In some cases, a breathalyser can double as an IID solution. Several breathalyser solutions are integrated with smartphone applications enabling remote monitoring and support in for instance treatment and rehabilitation programmes.

earable ankle and wrist-worn devices are commonly used in electronic monitoring (EM) programmes to enable continuous alcohol monitoring but can also be used for lighter application areas that are not as regulated as national EM programmes. Wall-mounted and stationary solutions are typically deployed at workplace entrances, probation offices or other controlled access points to facilitate high-volume testing.

A number of companies are involved in the market of connected alcohol and detection monitoring solutions. North America today accounts for the largest market and is also home to the most active companies. Examples of solution providers based in North America include Alcohol Countermeasure Systems, Smart Start, Mindr (Intoxalock, Keepr), SCRAM Systems (LifeSafer, Monitech, QuickStart Ignition Interlock and Guardian Interlock), BI Incorporated, BACtrack, SoberLink, SobrSafe and Trac Solutions among others. Examples of European solutions providers include Draeger, Innovative Process Solutions (Worksober), Buddi, Dignita and Senseair. Companies based outside of the regions but with deployed devices include SuperCom, and Breatech and Autowatch (Production Logix).

The total installed base of connected alcohol detection and monitoring solutions in North America and Europe reached an estimated 374,000 units and 184,000 units respectively in 2025. By 2030, the installed base is forecasted to reach 520,000 units in North America and close to 260,000 units in Europe. The largest device type segment for both Europe and North America is IIDs – representing around 50 percent for both regions – followed by breathalysers, ankle and wrist-worn devices, and wall-mounted and stationary solutions. The total market value in North America reached US$ 409 million in 2025. Growing at a CAGR of 6.9 percent, the market value is forecasted to reach US$ 571 million by 2030. The total market value of connected alcohol detection and monitoring solutions in Europe reached US$ 187 million in 2025, set to reach US$ 264 million by 2030.
